Went The Day Well? Review

Once a splendidly effective piece of propaganda, Alberto Cavalcanti's wartime thriller remains a classic of construction and suspense. Moreover, rarely will you see better ensemble acting (Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan, Frank Lawton, Basil Sydney). Based on a short story by Graham Greene, the film earned notoriety for the way in which the idealised inhabitants of a sleepy English village turned into ruthlessly resourceful resistance fighters. But every bit as nerve-wracking as the rearguard is the insidiousness of the invasion and the careless confidence of a supposedly vigilant nation.
