Young Wendy is driving to up North to a Summer job, when her dog goes missing in a town en route, meaning an increasingly costly diversion.
Kelly Reichardt’s sublime, miniature character study sees Wendy (a superb Michelle Williams) and her dog Lucy head out for Alaska for a new start. The car breaks down, the dog buggers off and Wendy is left stranded in a small Oregon town. Not afraid of long silences or zero degree filmmaking, Reichardt paints an affecting portrait of a dropout at the end of her tether, beautifully assisted by Williams.
Slow, ponderous, meticulously rendered realism that will appeal to specific audiences of slow, ponderous, meticulously rendered realism, with a heart.
