Vidal Sassoon The Movie Review

A documentary examining the rise and rise of the Picasso of coiffeuring, Vidal Sassoon.

Vidal Sassoon The Movie has something to do with hair and everything to do with guts: the history of a self-made man who wasn’t just a hairdresser but a real visual innovator, drawing inspiration from Bauhaus architecture to revolutionise lines and angles, designing bangs by imagining how the Guggenheim Museum would look if it were on your head. Directed with fanatical enthusiasm — “He’s Ali! He’s Einstein! He’s The Messiah of hair” — it favours celebration over gritty exposure. But with tongue firmly in cheek, this fabulous documentary of ’60s heyday footage, anecdotes and interviews with the Picasso of scissors is one hair appointment you won’t want to miss.

Hardly hard-hitting but a thoughtful and spirited look at a man at the top of his game and a moment in time that refused to fade.
