Underground Review

Image for Underground

An electrician and a plumber both meet and fall for the same woman at a London Underground station one day. But when one wins her affections, the other is unwilling to give up without a fight.

The astute use of montage, chiaroscuro lighting and subjective perspectives brings a touch of visual sophistication to sophomore Anthony Asquith’s silent melodrama centering on a love triangle involving an electrician, a shop girl and a Tube station attendant.

Treated to a typically slick restoration by the BFI, Asquith's subterranean melodrama is a fascinating journey back in time.
