INSPIRED BY A SENSATIONAL New York Times article, Trade masquerades as a searing exposé of the Mexican child sex slave industry, but in reality is more lurid, overwrought thriller-cum-melodrama. After his kid sister has been kidnapped into a child sex ring, Mexican street hustler Jorge (Ramos) jumps the border into the US to begin a search powered by coincidences. The picture the film paints of the child sex slave trade — paedophile motels and online auctions — are vivid and affecting, but the film fails to convince, particularly in the pat relationship between Jorge and Kevin Kline’s mournful investigator who has demons of his own. If only the whole matched the power and potency of the details.
