William Borgens (Kinnear) is divorced from Erica (Connelly). Their daughter Samantha (Collins) has just published her first novel, while son Rusty (Wolff) is seeking inspiration for his. But their love lives overtake their literary ambitions...

There’s a tonal unease in this comedy-drama about the romantic tribulations of a family of writers, which can’t quite decide if it’s mainstream-populist or indie-edgy. A Woody Allen feel pervades much of the dialogue between the sort of hyper-educated characters who casually discuss Portnoy’s Complaint – although it’s hard to imagine Allen allowing his cast to worship at the altar of Stephen King, as someone does here. But it’s in the romance rather than the literary stylings that the film works best, writer/director Boone and his well-teamed cast exploring each family member’s floundering relationships delicately and sympathetically.

It’s no masterpiece, but this is a promising debut from Boone and a good showcase for his entire cast.
