Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans Review

One comes out of this fragmentary documentary about the King Of Cool’s passion for motor racing liking him much less than one did going in. The chronicle of professional betrayals and ugly personal behaviour (screwing tootsies under his wife and children’s noses, making his PA take the blame for his drunken car crash) leaves a sour taste. Contemporary interviews weave through a trove of behind-the-scenes material but the facts, like the strong suggestion McQueen’s cancer was caused by asbestos in ’60s racing suits, are skewed to suit.
