After a dramatic turn as a trapper in The Revenant and playing the scowling General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Domhnall Gleeson's headed for something a little more comedic for a future film. He's joining Will Forte in A Futile And Stupid Gesture.

Not the behind-the-scenes goings-on at Donald Trump's advisers' attempts to make him seem rational you might think, it's actually a look at the founding of National Lampoon, the magazine that went on the launch a pantheon of comedy movies in the 1970s and '80s, among other things. Originally a spin-off from the Harvard Lampoon, it was formed by Doug Kenney, Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman with a blend of surrealist humour, satire and parody. Wain is playing Beard to Forte's Kenney.

David Wain, a man himself well-versed in comedy, is on to direct with John Aboud and Michael Coulton's script adapting Josh Karp's 2006 look at the magazine's birth, A Futile And Stupid Gesture: How Doug Kenney And National Lampoon Changed Comedy Forever. Netflix is backing this one, but there's no indication as to when it'll arrive.

In addition to returning as Hux for Star Wars: Episode VIII, Gleeson will be seen in drug trafficking thriller Mena with Tom Cruise (due January 6 next year) and infidelity comedy Crash Pad.
