Scooby-Doo Too: Monsters Unleashed Review

The original Scooby Gang once again face incredibly silly mysteries, aided by that dog among dogs, Scooby Doo. This time, a masked villain has a nefarious plot to take over the city of Coolsville by causing mayhem with a machine that recreates Mystery Inc.

Sooner rather than later, it was inevitable that we'd be treated to another helping of Doo. Just as predictably, nothing has changed.

The second big-screen Shaggy-and-dog story not only pits Mystery Inc. against another masked villain - albeit this time one with a monster-spewing device - but follows the first's sloppy paw-prints in nearly every way.

The screen is kept chock-full of cool-looking monsters, resurrected from the cartoon, and the giggle count climbs whenever Scoobs and Shaggy (Lillard) share yelping non-sequiturs.

Yet once again everything else falls flat, from the low-wattage guest appearance from Big Brovaz, to the stale character arcs given to Fred, Daphne and Velma. Themes of self-acceptance and inner strength seem a little out of place in a movie featuring a hound farting at phantasms.

This sequel is a step up from the first. Scooby's animation is improved, there are some fun action sequences and a smattering of amusing moments. But the same manic mugging that spoiled the original mars this movie, and the result is a film only a six year-old on a sugar rush could love.
