Arriving on a claret-streaked tide of buzz about audiences fainting at festival screenings and promise on display, French indie horror Raw is finally headed to UK screens. The trailer – which has bloody moments, hence its red band status – is below.

Raw, directed by Julia Ducournau, finds young Justine (Garance Marillier) arriving at veterinary school to carry on the family tradition. Everyone in her family cares for animals and are devout vegetarians. But being away from home for the first time is a chance to experiment. Especially when you're looking to fit in whatever the cost.

During a brutal hazing ritual for the new students, she eats raw meet and starts to discover a new craving... one rooted in cannibalism. A metaphor for sexual awakening and growing up, Raw has more on its mind than simple shock value, though it doesn't skimp on the body horror. You might have seen it appear in the current issue of Empire, where we featured it as one of the movies we're anticipating this year. The film itself will be out on 7 April.
