The second of Michael Morpurgo’s World War I stories to be adapted for the screen is an interesting contrast to Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, being a smaller scale, more conventional British period piece. One terrible night on the Western Front, Tommo Peaceful (George MacKay) looks back on the Devon childhood he and cheeky elder brother Charlie (Jack O’Connell) knew, the girl they both loved and the cruel events leading to court martial and tragedy at dawn.
