Cedric Klapisch has established himself as an ensemble specialist with the likes of 'When The Cat's Away' and 'Un Air De Famille'. And here again he seems much happier dealing with the communal exchanges than the sub-plot specifics in this witty but insubstantial comedy. Using a shared flat in Barcelona to poke fun at the various nationalistic and Eurocratic tendencies that undermine the EU is inspired, and the cast emphasise their French, British, German, Italian, Belgian, Danish and Andalusian characteristics without lapsing into excessive cultural caricature.
However, Romain Duris' relationships with sulky Parisian girlfriend Audrey Tautou and wistful exile Judith GodrÞche distract from the melting pot satire without providing much dramatic compensation. If Klapisch wants to be the new Rohmer, he'll need to sharpen his interpersonal skills.
