The Pool Review

Chris Smith's (Collapse and American Movie) doc follows a Goan called Venkatesh Chavan as he moves to the city looking for work. Chancing on a big country estate with a swimming pool, he becomes close to the owner who challenges him to fulfill his potential in Mumbai.

Echoes of Satyajit Ray in this neo-realist charmer from US documentarist Smith, which uses the friendship between two poor youths and a rich man’s saturnine daughter to explore class in modern India.

The talented Smith returns to the social concerns of his earlier documentary, American Movie, to forge a fascinating narrative set in modern-day Indian and full of insights into a class-riven country.
