Pascal Chaumeil’s follow up to his irresistible French language charmer Heartbreakers — we’ll draw a veil over his Nick Hornby adap A Long Way Down — is an equally enjoyable, if not quite as deft, slice of romantic goobledegook. Spinning off from a fun high concept, the film throws in grandiloquent travelogue (Africa, Moscow), screwball slapstick (a dentist novocaine gag works a treat), some nice human moments amidst the madness.
As a story, it doesn’t stand up to much analysis (it’s a help that it’s related as a dinner party yarn) and asks you to root for a heroine who does basically despicable things. But Kruger, who should do more rom-com, and Boon generate nice chemistry, the direction is super-slick and the film leaves you with a nice sense of the warm and fuzzies.
