An uneasy mix of psycho-drama, romance and conspiracy thriller, this is three mediocre genre pieces for the price of one. Anne Hathaway is a trauma therapist whose sessions with a group of plane-crash survivors convince her of a corporate cover-up by the airline as well as sparking a risky affair with Patrick Wilson’s persistent broker.
There’s some chemistry between the two leads and Wilson is excellent as the euphoric man-reborn, but pedestrian direction and a patchy script elicit uneven performances from the gifted Hathaway and a gilded support cast that includes Dianne Wiest and David Morse. The zany twist and a dank Vancouver setting designed to lend an otherworldly feel only serve to make it feel like one of the lesser X-Files.
