Depending on how you feel about him working on the movie at all, prepare to feel either A) elated or B) despondent that Darren Aronofsky is 100% confirmed as directing the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And now he has revealed the official title for the sequel: The Wolverine.

Talking with Drew at HitFix, Aronofsky announced the title and went on to say that it won’t have a number attached. Even more intriguingly, he’s treating it as a one-off, and not necessarily a direct sequel to Wolverine itself.

Which, provided Fox gives him the freedom, means that Aronofsky will be able to experiment with the film and make it stylistically different from the rest of the X-Men universe. No doubt that’s part of why the director agreed to make it in the first place. It also makes us hopeful that Christopher McQuarrie’s script strikes out in some interesting directions.

Afonofsky’s already maintaining part of his regular filmmaking team, with regular cinematography collaborator Matthew Libatique (who has superhero form, having worked on both Iron Man outings) on board. And given his own take on filmmaking and the critical/festival success he’s already enjoying with Black Swan, claws crossed Aronofsky actually gets his way as Logan heads to Japan…
