Since the first film managed to make $202 million worldwide, Universal is naturally looking to construct a sequel to this year’s CIA thriller Safe House. The first step is laying the foundation, and original writer David Guggenheim has been hired to start work.
Guggenheim, of course, famously wrote the first movie as a spec while he toiled as an editor at Us Weekly. The story found bored rookie agent Ryan Reynolds given a crash course on fieldwork when he has to keep a rogue agent (Denzel Washington) safe from even more powerful people who want him dead.
We’d caution, before you read any further, that spoilers lie ahead.
Naturally, the studio has not released any details yet about what the new movie might focus on, especially since Washington’s character ends the first one taking a dirt nap. But there’s always a chance the producers could decide to go with a prequel that follows his Tobin Frost. They’ll probably find a way to bring Reynolds’ Matt Weston into it anyway. As for who'll direct it? That decision is a ways off, but Daniel Espinosa may be too busy to return.
