A forthcoming videogame from EA

We reported on Friday that Universal was close to winning a bidding war with three other studios to pick up the rights to EA's forthcoming videogame, Dante's Inferno.

And wouldn't you know it - today came confirmation that they have indeed wrapped up the deal.

The deal – which came after a tussle between Universal and three other studios – is unusual in that the game hadn't even been publicly announced by EA beforehand. Indeed, the videogames giant isn't even confirming that the game will be called Dante's Inferno.

Thus far, in fact, all that's known about it is that it will be released next year and that it will involve a journey through the depths of Hell. The name, of course, comes from the epic 14th century poem by Dante Aligheri, in which the poet travelled through the nine circles of Hell.

Despite the vague details, though, Universal beat MGM, Paramount and New Regency to the deal – helped, perhaps, by the fact that last week they picked up another EA videogame, Army Of Two, for adaptation.

EA is believed to have brokered the deal not just because it wants to become more closely involved in adaptations of its key titles, but because it's keen to work closely with Universal to ensure that the film version blends well with the videogame.

Time will tell if their decision was correct. We'll bring you more – directors, writers etc. - once we get it.
