American author Cormac McCarthy writes the sort of books that bring filmmakers running. His novels have already either hit the screen (All The Pretty Horses), are being made now (No Country For Old Men) or are in serious development (Blood Meridien).
But his latest, The Road, has seen most studios shy away from trying to buy it, since it’s a harsh, post-apocalyptic story of a man trying to get his son to safety in the face of cannibals and starving survivors after a nuclear attack.
But now producer Nick Wechsler has stepped up to try and get a film version made, and he’s already attached director John Hillcoat (The Proposition) to the film. Apparently, Wechsler read the book shortly after seeing Hillcoat's gritty drama. "There was something beautiful in the way John captured the stark primitive humanity of the West in that movie," Wechsler told Variety.
He’s now trying to gather the cash and the rest of the creative team to get the script out of development and into production.
