Fans of the Canadian rock band so beloved of I Love You, Man's Sydney Fife will be disappointed, but Ron Howard's** Rush **isn't about long hair and loud noises: it's about long hair, loud noises and the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt back in 1976.

Written by Peter Morgan, Rush chronicles the real-life high-speed competition that played out between hotshot English wheelman Hunt and Austrian perfectionist Lauda. While one is a dashing playboy with a wild social life, the other is a quieter but no less driven genius of the track. Their rivalry became legend both on and off the Grand Prix circuit as they pushed themselves ever further in the pursuit of victory and glory.

Chris Hemsworth plays Hunt, displaying a variant of his English-esque Thor accent - it's perhaps not quite as plummy as we'd like, though that's just nit-picking - while Daniel Brühl, who may recognise from Goodbye Lenin! and Inglourious Basterds, plays Lauda.

Of course, die-hard Formula 1 addicts will have a thousand persnickety observations about the period piece, which naturally has to deal with the very real problems of shooting the races in a cinematic fashion without relying too heavily on CGI. The general feel, however, is a very positive one, with little touches sure to delight the more casual fan, such as the music, which may ring certain memory bells for lovers of the BBC's coverage of the sport.

Rush - which has nothing to do with Premium Rush - also features Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer and Alexandra Maria Lara and has a set US release date of September 20. The UK, meanwhile, will get to see it on September 13.
