Todd Phillips Finds A Mule

Mark & Jay Duplass will write it

He’s currently busy getting ready to crank out a third and likely final instalment of the Hangover franchise, but that isn’t stopping Todd Phillips from adding to his ever-expanding development roster. He’s now yoked Cyrus writer-directors Jay and Mark Duplass into the task of adapting Tony D’Souza’s novel Mule.

D’Souza’s book follows James and Kate, who are left dealing with a serious cash flow problem when they’re struck by both the economic downturn and an unexpected pregnancy.

But then a pot-growing friend offers a major opportunity: if James will transport one load from California to Florida, he’ll earn enough to keep his family afloat for months. One successful trip leads to more, and soon the stakes are rising ever higher.

It sounds like the sort of film Phillips could pull off well, and while the Duplass brothers are usually to be found writing scripts for themselves to direct, they have contributed the odd script polishing service in the past, so it’s not like they’ve never worked with others.

Phillips’ most recent project was as producer on Project X, while the Duplass boys latest, Jeff Who Lives At Home, will be out here on May 11.
