Though she reported back to work on US telly drama The Secret Life Of The American Teenager after winning acclaim for her role in The Descendants, Shailene Woodley has also kept her eye on the big screen. She’s set to work on indie pic The Spectacular Nowand has also just scored the lead in Gregg Araki’s latest drama, White Bird.

The film, which follows what happens to a troubled young woman (Woodley) when her mother mysteriously vanishes, will effectively be built around the actress. Variety reports that now he has his lead locked in, Araki will begin casting the other parts, which include that disappearing mother, the girl’s father and the police detective working the case.

Araki’s latest, Kaboom, arrived last year after playing Cannes. He’s also been developing The Womb, described as a “twisted police thriller” though it’s possible it has since evolved into White Bird. There are no details yet on when Bird will start shooting.
