In October last year, it emerged that former Daily Show host-turned-director Jon Stewart had old pal and fellow former Daily contributor Steve Carell in line for his next film, political satire Irresistible. As the details begin to come together, Rose Byrne is working out a deal to co-star.

Stewart has been shepherding this one through development after writing the script and starting to look for funding. We now know that it'll see Carell as a slick Democratic strategist who sees a retired veteran as the perfect person to challenge the sitting mayor in a small, right-wing Wisconsin town. But as he grooms his ideal candidate, he'll come up against his ruthless Republican counterpart, played by Byrne, who has every intention of keeping the current mayor in place.

Focus Features is now interested in backing the film, and the cameras could be rolling as early as this spring. Byrne, last seen in Instant Family, is lending her voice to sci-fi tale I Am Mother, will be seen in comedy Limited Partners and is at work on the Peter Rabbit sequel.
