It's not just critics and the HFPA who get to vote in non-Oscary awards, you also have the various guilds. The Directors Guild of America has taken its turn to announce nominations, with Ridley Scott, Adam McKay and George Miller among those making the list this year.

The DGA Awards have traditionally been a good pointer for the director and best picture nominations at the Oscars, but as ever it's worth pointing out that almost nothing can predict how the various Academy groups will lean once voting begins.

Along with The Big Short's McKay, The Martian's Scott and Miller (the latter of whom we're glad to see pick up another nomination for Mad Max: Fury Road), the list includes Tom McCarthy for Spotlight and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who has been winning plenty of gongs for The Revenant and is a sure thing to be nominated for an Oscar.

And in a new category for this year, the DGA is also awarding first-time directors, which is a pleasant change. Those up for the inaugural award? The Gift's Joel Edgerton, The Diary Of A Teenage Girl's Marielle Heller, Alex Garland for Ex Machina, Fernando Coimbra (A Wolf At The Door) and Laszlo Nemes for Son Of Saul.

We'll have to wait until February 6 for the Directors Guild awards themselves to happen.
