The Favourite

Fresh from its debut at the Venice Film Festival, where it received an outpouring of rave reviews, a new trailer for The Favourite has stormed online giving a closer look at what to expect from Yorgos Lanthimos’ period drama. Which is, anything but Downton. True to the Greek director’s idiosyncratic style, this take on Queen Anne’s reign is a comedy-drama of power shifts complete with barbed dialogue, splats of blood, and Emma Stone kneeing a man in the crotch in the middle of the woods. Take a look here:

Playing the monarch is Olivia Colman, pitching the royal as a paranoid, ditzy and unhinged ruler. Her best friend and confidante is Rachel Weisz’s Lady Sarah – until servant girl Abigail (Stone) turns up and works her way into Anne’s favour. Cue a bitter battle for the Queen’s affections between her two helpers. Coming from the director of Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, there’s plenty to be excited about with this one – just take a look at this striking poster.

The Favourite is heading to UK cinemas on 1 January 2019, but some audiences will get to see it early at the BFI London Film Festival 2018 on 18 October.
