That’s it, folks: summer is officially over. At least across the pond, where the three-day Labor Day weekend means that the tent poles have been packed away and awards season is kicking off. Though the final figures won’t arrive until Tuesday because of the holiday (and news is predictably slow), new horror arrival **The Possession **comfortably won the weekend with a $17.7 million opening.
Lawless also managed to do decent business, snagging a second place launch with $9.6 million in its moonshine fund and plenty of cash to spend on Hardingans. With just two new wide arrivals hitting the top 10 (new kids’ movie The Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure failed badly with $448,000 despite opening on 2,160 screens), The Expendables 2 was down in third with $8.8 million, while** The Bourne Legacy **sank to fourth and $7.2 million. ParaNorman rounded out the top five, earning $6.5 million.
The Odd Life Of Timothy Green clung to sixth place, making $6 million, while The Dark Knight Rises dropped two places to seventh with $5.8 million (still, it sauntered across the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend, so Warners will be happy). The Campaign slipped to eighth place and $5.4 million while 2016: Obama’s America was down to ninth with $5.1 million. Finally at 10th we find Hope Springs, which earned $4.7 million.
