With Charles Dickens' bicentenary in full swing, Mike Newell's Great Expectations brings one of his best-loved novels back to the screen with a youthful cast - showed off in this new poster - and old-fashioned storytelling vim.

If youthful casts and old-fashioned storytelling aren't your thing, it's worth pointing out that Dickens' hardy perennial has sustained many movie adaptations - most recently in Alfonso Cuarón's modern take - without losing its lustre. The latest man to tackle it also knows a thing or two about steep and perilous character arcs, what with that Harry Potter film behind him.

In Newell's version Pip (Jeremy Irvine) and Estella (Holliday Grainger) do their anguished dance under the eye of Helena Bonham Carter's bitter harridan Miss Havisham. The shady figure on the left, Magwitch (Ralph Fiennes), could be the answer to the young man's problems. Then again, when you're relying on Voldemort to change your fortunes, you know you're in trouble.

Can Newell's version match the giddy heights of David Lean's adaptation and how elegantly will Irvine fill the shoes of John Mills, Michael York, Ethan Hawke and co.? Find out when Great Expectations gets its UK release on November 30.
