Napoleon Dynamite arrived on cinema screens back in 2004 and sparked a wave of quotes, GIFs, T-shirts and references. But its impact hasn't been felt as much recently, with just a short-lived animated spin-off premiering in 2012. Now, though, there will be a comicbook sequel.

Jared and Jerusha Hess' quirky original followed the low-key adventures of the listless and alienated hero (Jon Heder), who decides to help his new friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) win the class presidency in their small western high school. All the while, he must deal with his bizarre family life back home.

Now IDW Publishing has brothers Carlos Guzman-Verdugo and Alejandro Verdugo at work on the sequel, which will feature art by Jorge Monlongo. The four-issue series takes us back to Idaho, where Pedro is still class president. But the good times might not last when a fellow student accuses Pedro of cheating in the election. Can Napoleon and Deb (Tina Majorino in the film) use their special skills to clear their friend before the principal can "Impeach Pedro"?

"Napoleon Dynamite is a pop-culture staple, a coming-of-age cult classic that spoke to the weirdo in all of us," says Alejandro Verdugo. "It’s an honour to have the chance to expand on the lives of Napoleon, Deb, and Pedro – characters that continue to resonate to this day. I still see people wearing ‘Vote for Pedro’ t-shirts!"

Sarah Richard designed the main cover (which you can see above) for the first issue, which will hit shelves in September. If you'll excuse us, we're off to make a dang quesadilla.
