Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have signed on to write the script for Robotech, the forthcoming adaptation of an 80s anime that might well become a vehicle for Tobey Maguire.
Certainly, Maguire is on board as a producer, along with Chuck Roven, Drew Crevello and Akiva Goldsman, and there could be a role in there that may well be perfect for him.
For the sci-fi epic is set in the future, at a time when Earth has developed a series of giant robots, using technology from an alien spacecraft that crashed in the South Pacific. When an alien civilisation attempts to invade Earth, the fightback centres around two young pilots, who must harness the technology and save the world.
If we were a gambling website, we'd say that Maguire could play one of the pilots. He's just not right for the role of Giant Robot.
Although you might be concerned about similiarities with Transformers here (there’s no doubt that the success of Michael Bay’s film helped persuade Warner Bros. to green light Robotech), this is no rip-off.
Instead, the TV show aired in the States in the ‘80s, and was a combination of three different series, re-edited and re-scripted to create enough material for daily syndication.
As for the movie version, Lawrence Kasdan had previously been brought on board to write a script, but it seems that the guys who wrote The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor and created Smallville will now be asked to succeed where the guy who wrote Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back could not. And yes, we know that was a long time ago, but you get the drift, no?
