Classic sci-fi shows have a way of enduring, from the constant regenerations of Doctor Who, to the evolving incarnations of Star Trek, and the politically-charged Battlestar Galactica reboot. But one beloved ‘60s series that hasn’t had much love in recent years is Lost in Space, the intergalactic castaway story of the Robinson family.

Ignore the 1998 film dud starring Matt LeBlanc — the show is getting the update it deserves on Netflix with a slick new 10-episode run. We’ve got an exclusive pic from the new series, as seen in the latest issue of Empire, which shows Judy Robinson (Taylor Russell) standing in a strange new world.

The new Lost in Space swaps out the camp and kitsch of the original for adventurous thrills, with showrunner Zack Estrin citing Amblin classics like E.T. and Jurassic Park as influences, alongside the scientific smarts of The Martian. “We’re not talking about space politics and trade agreements with aliens, we’re talking about discovery and adventure and wonder,” he told Empire. “It’s as much about space as Friday Night Lights is about football.”

There's also a brand new trailer for the series, which shows off the radical redesign of The Robot, some impressively-realised locations, and Parker Posey at the gender-swapped Dr. Smith.

The full series drops on Netflix on April 13, and you can read more about what to expect from the Robinson family’s return in the Spielberg Takeover issue of Empire, on sale now{ =nofollow}.
