Levelling up from slave to soldier, Spartacus: War Of The Damned star Liam McIntyre has just joined the cast of Renny Harlin's **Hercules{ =nofollow}. By all accounts he'll be playing an important sidekick of Kellan Lutz's demigod.

Harlin's is the Nu Image / Millennium version of the story, not to be confused with Brett Ratner's Paramount / MGM take that's also on its way to production, starring Dwayne Johnson ("I'm Hercules." "I'm Hercules."). Harlin has previously said that his is a more historically grounded story, as opposed to Ratner's comic book shenanigans.

McIntyre, Harlin says, is playing "military commander Soltiris, Hercules' best friend. Their relationship begins antagonistic but develops into a close bond forged in battle. Liam is infinitely entertaining to watch. We're lucky to have him."

Les Welden and Danny Lerner are producing, with Avi Lerner among the executive producers. The screenplay is by Steve Giulio and Sean Hood (Conan The Barbarian), and shooting starts next month at Nu Boyana studios in Sofia, Bulgaria.
