Laika Tracks Down Goblins
Fresh fantasy for the Coraline team
The team at Laika Studios found plenty of success adapting a work by a respected fantasy author with Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. And while their next release, ParaNorman, is an original, they have other book-based projects bubbling away. Add to that one more, as the company has announced a film based on Philip Reeve’s Goblins.
Marc Gustafson, a stop-motion veteran who served as animation director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox and most recently oversaw the Claymation segment of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, will bring his expertise to the movie.
Reeve’s book, which has just hit bookshelves over here, follows the adventures of clever young goblin Skarper, who’s not exactly the best fit among his rude, stupid peers living in an ancient castle. But when an ancient evil threatens his kind and other mythical creatures, he might just be the one that can save them all.
"Goblins is a fantasy with bite," Laika CEO Travis Knight tells Variety. "In the hands of Laika's freakishly talented artists and guided by the ineffably gifted Mark Gustafson, it will make a strange, stirring, and altogether beautiful film."
There’s no word yet on when Goblins might hit our screens. ParaNorman will be out on September 14.
