Her career has flourished since she played the blade-legged assassin Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Sofia Boutella has another potentially big role in her sights. She’s in early talks to play the title creature in Universal’s new reboot of The Mummy.

One of the early key parts of the studio’s attempt to revitalise its classic monster characters (Dracula, Frankenstein's creature, The Wolfman etc.) as a Marvel-style shared universe, The Mummy is aiming to kick the whole new idea off and has no less a name than Tom Cruise in negotiations to take one of its other main roles.

Not much is known about the film’s actual plot so far beyond the gender-swap of the title creature and the fact it’ll be set in the present day, but Jon Spaihts has written the script and Alex Kurtzman, who is overseeing the whole monstrous endeavour with Chris Morgan, is in the director’s chair. Universal wants the new Mummy in cinemas on March 24, 2017.

Boutella was last seen in Monsters: Dark Continent and recently finished shooting a part in Star Trek Beyond. She’s set to start work soon on thriller The Coldest City with Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.
