Word that Kiefer Sutherland is now planning to play the villain in Paul WS Anderson’s new 3D action adventure Pompeii gives us pause for thought. Isn’t the big bad a volcano in this story? Still, we can see the man who exploded with anger every week as 24’s Jack Bauer making it work.

Game Of Thrones' Kit Harington is playing a slave named Milo, who is shipped off just before Mount Vesuvius blows its top in 79 A.D. He must fight his way back into the city to save a gladiator friend, but more importantly to rescue the woman he loves, played by Emily Browning.

Because a massive great volcano erupting nearby was clearly not enough to put in the path of true love, Browning, the daughter of Harington’s master (Jared Harris) faces being handed off in marriage to Sutherland’s nasty Roman senator. He is also the man behind the enslavement of Milo’s village in the first place. Boo! Hiss! Shame! Etc.

Anderson has already started shooting in Toronto, aiming to get the movie made before segueing into work on the next Resident Evil film.

Sutherland will next be seen in indie thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist (due here May 10) and is still holding on to the idea that the 24 movie will happen, despite the odds stacking up against it and the clock ticking away.
