Years since he said he was retiring from directing to focus on podcasting and his love of weed, Kevin Smith is still going strong, with his filmmaking fire seemingly reignited by the likes of** Red State**, Tusk, the upcoming **Yoga Hosers **and more. With** Clerks III** already planned, he now appears ready to revisit another part of his early career, letting slip that he’s working on a sequel to 1995’s **Mallrats{
His first bigger-budget movie after the low-fi success of Clerks, Mallrats was largely dismissed by critics and didn’t exactly set the box office alight, but has since gathered a cult following. Smith teased a follow-up on Twitter, hit Facebook with more information and then called in to a radio show to offer up confirmation.
"Yeah, that's what we're working on," Smith said. "It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting."
"Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, 'Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?' Nobody’s clamouring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been, like, 20 years." And here we thought the View Askewinverse was closed for business...
With action comedy** Yoga Hosers** now wrapped, he’s focusing on** Clerks III** and long-gestating hockey project Hit Somebody, with the Mallrats sequel planned for early 2016. Is the world ready for the return of Brodie, T.S., Jay and Silent Bob? More pertinently, as Smith himself says, will anyone really care? Looks like we’ll find out…
