Hollywood loves a good origin story, and sooner or later every character will either have the traditional take on their beginnings explored and re-interpreted or have something fashioned out of whole cine-cloth for them. Peter Pan has been the subject of interest in this regard for a while now – there are at least two projects already bubbling away – and Warner Bros. has Anna Karenina’s Joe Wright negotiating to direct another in **Pan.
Jason Fuchs has written the script for this one, which appears, in this embryonic form at least, to be a straight re-telling of J.M. Barrie’s character’s early days. He's an orphan who is transported to Neverland, where he stops growing up as he becomes the saviour of the natives in an ongoing rebellion against pirate forces.
If he does make a deal, this sounds up Wright’s filmmaking alley: he’s best known for his big costume dramas such as **Karenina **and Pride & Prejudice, but he’s also shown an ability to hop genres, as in Hanna. Assuming the project goes ahead, it’ll be competing with one being cooked up by **Alice In Wonderland **producer Joe Roth at Sony, and the Pan prequel with Gary Ross attached, Peter And The Starcatchers, at Disney.
