As many Spidey fans may know, director Julie Taymor (Across The Universe and the stage version of The Lion King) has been working on a Spider-Man stage musical with songs by U2. Yes, that sounds like a ridiculous thing to be doing, but Cinematical recently spoke to Jim Sturgess who said it's actually looking pretty good. Taymor has said in past interviews that Sturges and his Across The Universe co-star Evan Rachel Wood would be her ideal stars for the show and now Sturgess says that he's been working on it with her.
"We actually have done a workshop for it," he told the site. "[Taymor] asked me and Evan to come down and do this workshop that she was doing, so it was a chance to work with Julie again and Evan again...We just did two weeks, and we kind of hung out with Bono and the Edge and sung songs about Spider-Man...As ridiculous as it sounds, it's going to be an incredible piece of work."
Sturgess says he's not sure if he'd be in the final show, because it depends on timing. Cinematical also raised something we've discussed in news stories before: would Sturgess be interested in playing Spidey on film, if Tobey Maguire doesn't come back for a fourth film? He's got the right kind of geeky-handsome look for the role and a boy-next-door temparament that would work. But he says it's probably not for him. "I don't think I would do it," he says. "I've never seen myself as an actor who might pass off as a superhero ... and I'm amazed that I'm even being considered for the Spider-Man role."
