Jake Gyllenhaal On Trail Of Nightcrawler
With Rene Russo and Dan Gilroy
The Bourne Legacy may not quite have kicked the franchise in the robust new direction hoped for, but it certainly gave a boost to the professional clout of writer Tony Gilroy. He's now producing the indie thriller Nightcrawler, the directorial debut of his brother Dan Gilroy. Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo will be heading his cast.
Dan also wrote the film, which involves "a driven young man who discovers the nocturnal world of freelance crime journalism in LA". So nothing to do with blue mutants that go BAMF! then. Nor the Scottish techno band; telekinetic Twilight Zone military units; or that Brian Thompson guy in Cobra. Oh wait, he was the Night Slasher. Makes all the difference.
Gilroy (Dan) was the co-writer on Legacy and has the "story" credit on Shawn Levy's Real Steel. He also wrote The Fall (directed by Tarsem, who appears elsewhere in news this morning), and, much earlier, the '90s cult oddity Freejack. He's been married to Rene Russo since 1992.
...A Hollywood warhorse who knows his way around a genre screenplay, in other words. There are scant further details on Nightcrawler at this stage, but Variety believe it's evidence of a darker, more "story-driven" and more adult direction for Gyllenhaal since his move to new representation at WME. No more Prince Of Persia then.
