Tom Ford’s long-awaited follow-up to A Single Man is a byzantine book-in-a-film-in-a-film affair, stuffed to the gills with brooding menace, noir-like twists and LA gloss. It’s also got a new trailer that you can experience below.

Ford has assembled another talented cast for a project he scripted himself. Amy Adams plays jaded LA art gallery owner Susan Morrow, stuck in a loveless relationship with Armie Hammer’s adulterous financier and jolted by the arrival of an unpublished manuscript by her former husband (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Reading it, she finds a story of vengeance and assorted nasties set in the arid Texan landscape. This tale we see visualised with a dad (Gyllenhaal #2), his wife (Isla Fisher) and daughter (Ellie Bamber) accosted by a gang led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Ray. Things, it’s safe to say, turn sour fast, even with Michael Shannon’s cop circling. Back in the film’s reality, Morrow wonders what her ex’s story may be saying about their fateful relationship.

Nocturnal Animals is out in the UK on 4 November.
