“This is my last report as the Captain of the Starship Enterprise,” intones a melancholy Kirk in the new trailer for Star Trek Beyond. The old girl certainly looks like she’s hit on (more) hard times as the Federation’s finest go head-to-gnarled-head with Idris Elba’s vicious Krull with some help from Sofia Boutella's Jaylah in Empire's new cover movie. We’ve not been given a huge idea of the plot’s minutiae just yet, save for the fact that Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg) and the gang are once more in big trouble out in space. They’ve been pushing the frontier, and the frontier, as Elba’s villain says, is “pushing back”.

The trailer is an action-packed affair that suggests the move away from cerebral sci-fi to a straighter action franchise may just be continuing apace. There’s plenty of ferocious action beats here, not to mention new alien tech, to raise the pulse rate. Look out for Elba’s heavy weaponry in a shot in which he goes full Oldboy on some poor footsoldiers.

The new Empire is available in all good, evil and Klingon newsagents from Thursday June 30. You can subscribe to Empire (including the option of an instant digital subscription by clicking here{ =nofollow}).

Star Trek Beyond reaches UK and US cinemas on July 22.
