It’s not often you see Hugh Jackman playing anything other than the hero, or, in this year’s drama Prisoners, a man pushed to do the wrong thing in a desperate situation. But if Joe Wright has his way, we could all soon be booing the man as though he's a panto baddie creeping across the stage: he has the Les Miserables man in talks to play Blackbeard in **Pan{ =nofollow}.

Anna Karenina’s director jumped aboard the origin story project last month, and though there is no word on someone to play the title character, the ensemble is slowly coming together. Blackbeard is the main antagonist of Jason Fuch’s script, the pirate king on whose ship the young Hook – future croc-botherer and baddie – serves. Hook and his pal Pan team up to take Blackbeard down. Then, of course, the rifts in their friendship start to develop and the longstanding rivalry is born.

Wright is gearing up the film for Warner Bros. and if Jackman makes a deal, we’d expect the rest of the elements to fall into place quickly. Jackman is at work now on Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie and will, of course, be back as Wolverine in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, due out on May 22.
