Half-Blood Prince Breaks Records Already

Midnight openings may be best ever

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is barely out of the box-office gate and it's already broken records. Its 12.01 midnight screenings in the US took in a whopping $22.2million dollars, making it a record-breaker for that sort of opening.

Yes, that's considerably ahead of either The Dark Knight's $18m, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith's $17m or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $16m. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix also opened in midnight slots in 2007, taking $12m and going on to gross $139.7m in its first five-days. If Half-Blood Prince continues to outperform its predecessor to that extent, this could be the biggest opening weekend of all time by quite a margin.
