Sunday night was Golden Globes night in America as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out its awards. Among those going home with film gongs? Alejandro González Iñárritu, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lawrence and The Martian, the latter of which won, yes, Best Comedy.
Host Ricky Gervais's opening monologue wasn't exactly the best received of the show's history, likely prompting many in the audience to wish Tina Fey and Amy Poehler could come back. But as the list of winners grew, so did the positive vibes, at least for the most part.
Among the pleasant surprises were Sylvester Stallone picking up the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Creed, Kate Winslet named Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs and, perhaps less of an unexpected moment, Matt Damon scoring Best Actor: Comedy or Musical for The Martian, which took that somewhat controversial Musical or Comedy main award over the likes of Joy, The Big Short and Spy.
Alejandro González Iñárritu was named Best Director for The Revenant, following a joke about the film's now infamous bear scene on the awards show and preceding his leading man Leonardo DiCaprio taking Drama Best Actor and the film itself Best Motion Picture: Drama. Brie Larson took the Drama Actress award for Room.
On the television front, the Globes really seem to have fallen for Amazon's original series Mozart In The Jungle, about the New York Symphony, with there show nabbing Best TV Series: Comedy Or Musical and leading man Gael Garcia Bernal winning Best Actor: Comedy for the show. Mr. Robot was also a winner, besting Game Of Thrones, Empire and more for Best Drama, with Christian Slater nabbing Best Supporting Actor in a TV series: Drama for the show, while Oscar Isaac cemented his successful year with a a Limited Series acting win for HBO's Show Me A Hero.
Jon Hamm won a fairly predictable Best Actor in a TV Series: Drama for his final season of Mad Men, praising the team behind the show for not going with his choice of music for that crucial last scene - he suggested Chumbawumba.
