You wait months for a Ghost Rider update, and then two come along at once. Following yesterday's bean-spilling by Brian Taylor, Johnny Whitworth has just revealed that his role in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is as albino half-demon Blackout{
We already knew that Whitworth would be playing the villain; we just didn't yet know which one, or that he'd be straight from Marvel. But, says Johnny, "For those who read the comics, the character is Blackout. Up until like page 70 [of the script] he's human, and not a very nice guy. I get turned into him by the Devil to complete my job... to fight Ghost Rider." Ciaran Hinds' Satan "gives me the abilities to compete on some level with that guy."
Blackout (actually one of two characters with that name in the Marvel universe) first appeared in the **Ghost Rider **comics in the 1990s. He has an extreme sensitivity to sunlight, mechanically enhanced vampire-like teeth and fingernails, and the ability to cancel out light. Nothing to corrupt the eyes; there is no vision here. He often works with the demon Lilith: the first wife of the biblical Adam. She's his grandmother. Or something.
In short, a suitably mad villain for a Ghost Rider being directed by the Crank team of Neveldine/Taylor, and one that should prove a lot more toothsome than Wes Bentley's anaemic foe from last time. Whitworth previously turned out for N/T in Gamer, so he knew what he was in for.
Spirit of Vengeance, once again starring Nicolas Cage, is out next February.
