Since 2010's Tron: Legacy he's kept to the more initimate likes of Country Strong, On The Road and Inside Llewyn Davis, but after three years of indie drama Garrett Hedlund is ready to flirt with the mainstream once again. It's just been revealed that he'll be playing Captain Hook in **Pan, Joe Wright's extrapolation of the J. M. Barrie classic.

Hook isn't the antagonist in this version of the story. The main villain duties belong to Blackbeard, for whom Hook was a boatswain according to Barrie. Blackbeard is either being played by Hugh Jackman or Javier Bardem, depending on what you read.

Pan posits that Peter is an orphan transported to Neverland, where he stops growing up and becomes the saviour of the natives in an ongoing rebellion against pirate forces. He and Hook end up forming an alliance to take Blackbeard down (Mutiny, Mr Hook!). But later, of course, the rifts in their friendship start to develop and the longstanding rivalry is born. It'll all end in crocodiles.

Hook was apparently a much sought after role, with the casting finally coming down to Hedlund, Jack Huston and Ezra Miller. So commiserations to the latter two, but with competing Peter Pan projects developing both at Disney and Sony, they may have the chance to scratch any lingering Hook itch they still harbour.

Jason Fuchs wrote Pan's screenplay, and the producers are Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros.' Sarah Schechter. The current release date is July 17 next year, so Pan will be needing its Peter pretty soon...
