The remake of The Crow has gone through a myriad of issues in its journey to the screen, with Stephen Norrington on board to direct, then walking after creative clashes. Mark Wahlberg flirted with the idea of taking on the lead role, but chose to pass. Most recently, 28 Weeks Later** director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was linked with the film’s top job. Now it appears the contracts have been worked out, as backers Relativity Media has announced that Fresnadillo will take the gig.
In a press release landing on our virtual doorstep, Relativity’s Tucker Tooley sang the praises of their new choice. “Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is an incredibly talented and imaginative filmmaker. We are thrilled to have him at the helm and are excited to work with both Pressman and Apaches on what we all believe will be a compelling and innovative reimagining of The Crow.”
The director is currently putting the finishing touches to horror thriller Intruders, which stars Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl. Once he’s locked that down, he’ll start work with a writer to develop the Crow script.
While the full details aren’t known, the film will reboot the story of Eric Draven from James O’Barr’s cult graphic novel. Slaughtered by thugs, Draven is resurrected as a kick-ass agent of vengeance so he can punish those who wronged him and killed his wife before the couple are reunited.
The biggest challenge facing the new director? Making us all forget that the rubbish sequels and TV spin-off ever happened…
