Given that series creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge hadn't intended to make a second run of Fleabag until inspiration struck her, additional word that the latest episodes will be the last is not much of a surprise, and something she's talked up in the past. Now co-star Sian Clifford, who plays Claire, has confirmed that the show will end after next week's series 2 finale.

"There will not be a third series," she told BBC Breakfast. "This is it." That echoes Waller-Bridges's own statement that the final instalment would bring the curtain down on the chatty, sarcastic character she has brought from stage play to TV and back. "I have thought about it and there isn't going to be one," she said of a third series earlier this year.

While we hoped against hope that Waller-Bridge might find a reason to make more (someone order up a truck full of money, even if we doubt that would do it), we'll have to make do with the show existing at all, something for which we can all be grateful. The final episode airs Monday, while US audiences must wait until 17 May to see it arrive on Amazon Prime.
