Putting her hands - or, rather, hand - in the air like she just doesn't care is Susan Sarandon. Putting her hands in the air and definitely caring is Melissa McCarthy, as the unlikely pair join forces for Ben Falcone's upcoming comedy-drama, Tammy.

You might know Ben Falcone as the sandwich-chomping air marshall from 2011's Bridemaids, but McCarthy knows him as her husband, and in terms of Tammy, her co-writer and director.

A labour of love for the pair, the film sees McCarthy's fast food fry cook Tammy come home one day to find her husband in bed with another woman. Looking to get the heck out of Dodge, she's slowed down when her car dies too. So, despite serious misgivings, Tammy turns to her grandmother, Pearl (Sarandon), who doesn't always play by the rules.

Joining the two leads in the supporting cast department are Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Dan Aykroyd, Toni Collette and Falcone himself, who plays Tammy's sleazy boss. "I play a real creepy guy," Falcone tells USA Today. "I'm just kind of creepy, so it works."

**Tammy **is set for a July 2 release. Falcone and McCarthy will be hoping it does as well as last year's The Heat ($229 million worldwide) or Identity Thief ($173 million).
