Dominic Monaghan has a knack for proving the doubters wrong. If you had to guess which member of the Lord Of The Rings’ Fellowship might not have carved out a successful post-PJ career, the former Merry might well have been at the top of the list.

But then he went and bagged himself a major recurring role in Lost, only the biggest TV phenomenon in ages. Yet all good things come to an end, and Monaghan’s Charlie glugged his last in the third season of the show. And surely that was it? Surely he’d head back to England and carve out a nice little career doing BBC dramas and the odd sitcom?

Far from it. For Monaghan has just signed on to play the lead in a psychological thriller called Pet for MGM.

Directed by Edna McCallion, Monaghan will play Seth, a loner who kidnaps his high school crush and keeps her captive beneath the animal shelter where he works. But, this being a psychological thriller, not all is as it appears to be.

We’re delighted for Monaghan – like all the Fellowship whenever Empire has had the good fortune to encounter them, he’s a really nice guy and we wish him well. And to be fair, it’s not exactly his first lead – he also starred in Richard Jobson’s The Purifiers, and the upcoming period zombie drama, I Sell The Dead. Nevertheless, with Dom doing well for himself, the Billy Boyd Career Rehabilitation Fund starts here!

Pet will start shooting in the next couple of months.
