Disney Reveals Avatar Theme Park Concept Art

The world of Pandora lands in Florida in 2017

If you watched Avatar and thought, ‘Hhm… I wonder what it would be like to wander around that incredibly dangerous forest, populated by giant cat-people who don’t like humans and flora that wants us all dead?’ you’re going to get your wish in about four years, as Disney will open its planned Avatar attraction in the Animal Kingdom Park in Florida. Take a look at some concept art in the gallery lower down the page.

This new theme park experience was originally announced back in 2011, with Avatar god James Cameron excited to bring his creation to life outside of the computer’s memory. "Avatar was meant to celebrate our interaction with nature and nature's wonder and diversity," Cameron said at a press conference. "Putting our Avatar themed land into Animal Kingdom is extremely exciting.”

The idea is that guests will be able to wander through different chunks of Pandora, and presumably not interacting with a giant, terrifying James Cameron as one of the pictures above seems to indicate: that’s just him taking a look at a model of the attraction.

"As these concept renderings show in epic scale, in the world of Avatar, guests will encounter awe-inspiring floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound," says Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs in a statement.

No doubt interest will be stoked by Cameron’s planned Avatar sequels, currently scheduled to arrive in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
